Chapter 1: Number Sense
The first 3 or 4 weeks will be spent building number sense. We will be working on place value, comparing and ordering numbers, rounding and estimating. We will also review addition and subtraction.
Place Value is the worth of a number based on where it is in the number. For example the 3 in 13, 478 is actually worth 3,000. While the 3 in 12,630 is actually worth only 30 or three tens. Students will also need to know the three forms of numbers: expanded form, word form and standard form. To practice place value with your child check out the following links.
STUDY JAMS by Scholastic- This link provides a video explaining what place value is, and allows for the student to test their knowledge of the subject area.
Math Racing Game --allows students to review standard form and word form of numbers in a fun racing game.
Walk the Plank -- Allows students to review expanded form
Along with place value, we will review comparing and ordering numbers. Students will need to be able to use the symbols (>, < , =) to compare two numbers. They will also need to know the written form of greater than, less than and equal to. Students will need to order numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least.

Rounding allows a student to quickly estimate an answer using any of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Rounding relies on a student knowing their place value. The magic number in rounding is 5. If the number to the right of the place value you are rounding to is 5 or greater it makes the number you are rounding to raises by one.

We will spend the last part of the chapter on Addition, Subtraction, and decoding word problems.
Students will spend time in class daily practicing their math facts through an online program called xtramath.org. If your child was already using this site, please have them continue practicing at home. We will also have bi-weekly 5 minute timed tests. I know that some children do not do as well on the computer program as they do on the paper and pencil test.
